Tsunoda made a one-off appearance for Racing Bulls at the Dutch Grand Prix and finished 11th at Zandvoort. Although he missed out on the points, Formula1.com said the outing put him back on the radar in the Formula 1 paddock.

According to Motorsport.com, Racing Bulls CEO Peter Bayer had been told the previous Friday about Isack Hadjar's wrist injury and the possibility of a driver change. Tsunoda said he did not receive the call until Tuesday, when he was on a beach in Greece.

Motorsport.com also reported that Tsunoda described the past week as a rollercoaster. He said he was physically fully prepared as soon as the opportunity arose.
