Madring set for changes after processional Spanish GP debut
Formula 1 drivers called for layout changes to Madrid’s new Madring circuit after a dull Spanish Grand Prix in which overtaking was described as extremely difficult. Organisers say they are prepared to make tweaks for 2027 and have already received recommendations from the FIA.
The 5.4km Madring circuit around Madrid’s IFEMA fairgrounds made its competition debut at last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. Drivers and teams praised the venue’s facilities and the challenge of the track, but the race itself was widely criticised after proving highly processional.
Several drivers said overtaking opportunities were effectively absent. Max Verstappen said before the race that he could not see a single overtaking chance and suggested he would make numerous changes, and afterwards drivers pushed for revisions to the layout following what some described as a very poor grand prix.
In response, Spanish Grand Prix organisers have said they are ready to make changes to improve overtaking for 2027. Planned revisions are being considered in three areas of the circuit, and organisers have already received recommendations from the FIA.
