Mercedes says Verstappen disrupted Russell’s Monza pole attempt

In qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Mercedes used Kimi Antonelli to help George Russell with a tow on the final Q3 run. Antonelli said he did what the team asked and, with little to gain because of a back-of-the-grid penalty, focused on supporting Russell. He also said he expects Russell to return the favour later in the season.

Russell was frustrated after the session, saying Verstappen slammed on the brakes at the start of their final laps. Verstappen was leading a queue that included Antonelli and Russell, who had planned to work together to give Russell the best possible slipstream.

Russell ultimately qualified second. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said Verstappen had cost the team a chance at pole, while other reports described Verstappen’s move as having spoiled Russell’s bid.
