Antonelli criticises himself after Baku qualifying crash

Antonelli’s qualifying session in Baku ended early when he crashed in Q1 after clipping the wall. The error brought his run to a premature finish in the first phase of qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Afterwards, Antonelli was openly critical of himself, describing the incident as unnecessary and stupid, and saying he was very angry with himself. He said the crash left him facing a start toward the back of the grid for Saturday’s Grand Prix.

Sky Sports F1 pundit Jamie Chadwick said the crash was a return to old habits and called it an unnecessary risk given Mercedes’ pace. At the time, Antonelli was leading the drivers’ championship by 81 points over team-mate George Russell.
